A)
The
Command of Christ at the Ascension:
Jesus
Christ, Risen From the Dead, Says: Go!!
Matt
18, 18-20: 18 Then
Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing
them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
B)
Moses’ Intimacy with God:
Moses and
the Glory of the Lord: Exodus, 33
12 Moses
said to the Lord, “You have
been telling me, ‘Lead these people,’ but you have not let me know whom
you will send with me. You have said, ‘I know you by name and you have
found favor with me.’ 13 If you
are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to
find favor with you. Remember that this nation is your people.”
14 The Lord replied, “I my self will go
along…
Numbers 13:17-33 – The Lord
Says: Go! Moses Says Go!
17 When
Moses sent them to explore Canaan, he said, “Go up through the Negev and
on into the hill country. 18 See what
the land is like and whether the people who live there are strong or weak, few
or many. 19 What kind of land do they live in? Is it good or
bad? What kind of towns do they live in? Are they unwalled or fortified? 20 How is
the soil? Is it fertile or poor? Are there trees in it or not? Do your best to
bring back some of the fruit of the land.” (It was the season for the first
ripe grapes.)
21 So they
went up and explored the land from the Desert of Zin as far as Rehob, toward
Lebo Hamath. 22 They went up through the Negev and came to
Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, lived.
(Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) 23 When they
reached the Valley of Eshkol,[a] they cut off a branch
bearing a single cluster of grapes. Two of them carried it on a pole between
them, along with some pomegranates and figs.24 That
place was called the Valley of Eshkol because of the cluster of grapes the
Israelites cut off there. 25 At the
end of forty days they returned from exploring the land.

Effect of the Report on the Exploration of the Promised Land: Grumbling and Fear.
26 They came
back to Moses and Aaron and the whole Israelite community at Kadesh in the
Desert of Paran. There they reported to them and to the whole
assembly and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 They gave
Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does
flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit. 28 But the
people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very
large. We even saw descendants of Anak there. 29 The
Amalekites live in the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites live
in the hill country; and the Canaanites live near the sea and along
the Jordan.”
30 Then
Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take
possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.”
31 But the
men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are
stronger than we are.” 32 And they
spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored.
They said, “The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we
saw there are of great size.33 We saw
the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim).
We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to
them.”
C) Victory, But Only With Faith and Intimacy With the Lord
Led by
Caleb and Josue With Faith
Deuteronomy 2, 24:
Defeat of
Sihon King of Heshbon
24 “Set out now and cross the Arnon Gorge. See, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his country. Begin to take possession of it and engage him in battle.
Deuteronomy 3
Defeat of
Og King of Bashan
3 Next we
turned and went up along the road toward Bashan, and Og king of Bashan with
his whole army marched out to meet us in battle at Edrei. 2 The Lord said to me, “Do not be afraid of
him, for I have delivered him into your hands, along with his whole army and
his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in
Heshbon.”
3 So the Lord our God also gave into our
hands Og king of Bashan and all his army. We struck them down, leaving no
survivors. 4 At that time we took all his cities. There
was not one of the sixty cities that we did not take from them—the whole region
of Argob, Og’s kingdom in Bashan. 5 All these
cities were fortified with high walls and with gates and bars, and there were
also a great many unwalled villages. 6 We
completely destroyed[a] them, as we had done
with Sihon king of Heshbon, destroying[b] every city—men, women
and children.7 But all the livestock and the plunder from
their cities we carried off for ourselves.
8 So at
that time we took from these two kings of the Amoritesthe territory east of the
Jordan, from the Arnon Gorge as far as Mount Hermon. 9 (Hermon
is called Sirion by the Sidonians; the Amorites call it Senir.) 10 We took
all the towns on the plateau, and all Gilead, and all Bashan as far as Salekah and
Edrei, towns of Og’s kingdom in Bashan. 11 (Og king
of Bashan was the last of the Rephaites. His bed was decorated with iron
and was more than nine cubits long and four cubits wide.[c] It is still in Rabbah of
the Ammonites.)
D) Today
we confront the same fearful impossibility of placing Christ at the summit of all human affairs. The Method is the same: Intimacy,
Faith and Trust. The message of Pope Francis: GO!!
